Mayookha disappointed despite winning gold

Mayookha disappointed despite winning gold
Kolkata: Disappointed at failing to secure an Olympic berth in the ongoing 51st National Open Athletics Championships, long jumper Mayookha Johny on Saturday said she would have to get back to the basic training and try to qualify early next year.

Mayookha, who has already qualified for 2012 Olympics in triple jump, going past the London Games `B` qualifying standard of 14.10m, needed a 6.65m jump to get a berth in long jump. But her gold medal effort of 6.54m today was not enough.

"Looking at my preparation and earlier performance, this was very ordinary. I could have done better. It`s really disappointing as we have been doing better while training," Mayookha told reporters.

"Two of my first jumps were good, while the rest of them were ordinary. I am still hopeful of qualifying for the Olympics," she said.

Mayookha`s coach, however, blamed it on the luck.

"She could have achieved the Olympic B norm in her fourth and fifth attempts, but those were deemed foul may be just for some millimetres," the coach said.

"We will now have to start afresh. We have a two-three months gap. We will have to look up for a meet outside India. I am hopeful that she will qualify for Olympics in long jump," he said.
